Reuters : Maine voters latest to turn down gay marriage

Excerpt: PORTLAND, Maine (Reuters) – Voters in Maine on Tuesday overturned a law allowing same-sex couples to wed, dealing a fresh setback to the U.S. gay marriage movement in a race that attracted national attention.

The law was approved by Maine’s Legislature in May but was not implemented after opponents gathered enough signatures to put the issue to a “people’s veto.”
About 30 lawyers crowded into a San Francisco courtroom hearing the challenge to California’s Proposition 8 same-sex marriage ban, a high-risk venture that will set court policy for years, if it reaches the U.S. Supreme court.

Gronstal blocks amendment to reverse Iowa marriage equality

Old news, however I neglected to share this before, but I was reminded of it today. Having been raised in Iowa, this touches me deeply. It reminds me that no matter what I have to say negatively about my home state, Iowa supports marriage equality and what Sen. Gronstal says underlines why we will have our equality soon. Knowing what we’ve been through lately and how we’ve been faltering and lost in our path to equality over the past couple months, I want to remind everyone that if words like this can come out of an Iowan, remember what we can all do—together.

See’s Candies: Letters Show Noncompliance with Equal Benefits Ordinance

CONFIRMED:  See’s Candies is closing it’s Union Square location in San Francisco because they are not in compliance with SF’s requirement to offer equal benefits to domestic partners & legal spouses. They state that they won’t renegotiate union contracts for a single city, which highlights the fact that they have no plans to offer employees equal benefits universally.

Although increasingly less common in CA, it is standard practice to not offer any more benefits than State and Federal law requires for domestic partners and other protected groups. This I understand from a purely economical standpoint, but to point out that their tactic would be to renegotiate for a single city rather than ensure that ALL their employees get equal treatment is something I do not understand and choose to stand against.

See’s was my favorite. I send See’s as gifts often, and bring 1 pound into the office on almost a weekly occasion. I will no longer spend my money at See’s unless they change their ways. I am writing a letter to them personally expressing my feelings and quantifying their loss in sales due to their decision.

I strongly encourage everyone else to follow suit. Wouldn’t it be nice if they listen?

Boston Globe: Mass. challenges federal Defense of Marriage Act

Excerpt: Massachusetts, the first state in the nation to legalize gay marriage, has become the first state to challenge the constitutionality of a federal law that defines marriage as the union of a man and a woman, saying Congress intruded into a matter that should be left to individual states.

“In enacting DOMA [the Defense of Marriage Act], Congress overstepped its authority, undermined states’ efforts to recognize marriages between same-sex couples, and codified an animus towards gay and lesbian people,” the state said in a lawsuit filed today in US District Court in Massachusetts.

NY Times: Indian Court Overturns Gay Sex Ban

Excerpt: NEW DELHI —In a landmark ruling Thursday that could usher in an era of greater freedom for gay men and lesbians in India, New Delhi’s highest court decriminalized homosexuality.

“The inclusiveness that Indian society traditionally displayed, literally in every aspect of life, is manifest in recognizing a role in society for everyone,” judges of the Delhi High Court wrote in a 105-page decision, India’s first to directly address rights for gay men and lesbians. “Those perceived by the majority as ‘deviants’ or ‘different’ are not on that score excluded or ostracized,” the decision said.
